Why this song exists
“I Like Me Better When I’m High” exists because sometimes I just like getting high. That’s really part of the answer. I’ve spent a huge part of my life around cannabis—as an advocate, an activist, a patient supporter and someone who has studied the plant and the people who use it. But cannabis doesn’t always need a political speech attached to it. Sometimes I simply enjoy it. I like the way I feel. I like slowing things down. I like relaxing. And, quite frankly, sometimes I like me better when I’m high. I also don’t believe the line between recreational use and therapeutic use is always as clear as people make it sound. Someone may come home after a stressful day, smoke a joint and say, “I’m just getting high.” From my perspective, they may also be unwinding, releasing some of the day’s tension and giving themselves permission to settle down. That doesn’t mean cannabis is right for everybody, and this song isn’t medical advice. It’s simply an honest statement about my own relationship with a plant that has been part of my life for a very long time. There are serious cannabis songs in my catalog. There are political cannabis songs. There are advocacy songs. This isn’t one of them. This one gets to be fun. Sometimes I just like getting high.
